Unfortunately, there has been massive abuse going on for a while now (mass uploads, next to malware and copyright infringing material). Due to our policies and principles we couldn't do much to counter this, eg. login requirement, server logging, checking of files/preventing duplicate uploads of malware; all these things that we can't do.

The traffic spiked extremely hard, upwards of 50TB a month. Our CDN provider didn't like this and kicked us without warning today. The CDN provider we were using was basically key to the quality that put.re has been offering over the years. There is no alternative. Without a CDN, we won't be able to provide decent download speeds outside of the EU, while also not having enough bandwidth available for future growth. For a paid service, this wouldn't be a problem, but that is not was put.re was made for.

We could also make the switch to be an exclusive image hosting service, but there are various other services for that. Then there is also the option to use a new domain and using the same CDN as before, but that is not a long term solution. So, not sure what the future brings. For now, new uploads are disabled. Download your files if you have anything important hosted there.

That was the status from a few months ago. We just have not found a good solution to our problem, yet. The CDN provider has unblocked us by now (for unknown reasons), but that does not mean we can go back to business as usual.

The core principal of put.re was always to provide ourselves with a fast and private method to share files, which we also wanted to offer to you, the general public. Since this incident we have been using put.re privately. Currently we do not have any way to continue like we did in the past.

But we are thinking about adding a token system which you could compare to a login, just without an email address. You can add this token via a parameter to any request to the API (say, in ShareX or your own implementations) and continue using put.re like before. We will not log which files get uploaded with a specific token (and you would have to take our word for it), but this will still allow us to identify massive spammers and malicious actors faster, even given this limitation.
